Record tolling revenue for Irish M50 motorway
- Almost EUR 170 million were collected in 2022, a 20% increase over previous year
- Kapsch TrafficCom provides key elements for the tolling system
Vienna/Dublin, May 17, 2023 – Last year, a record EUR 169.6 million was collected in toll charges, penalties and other fees on the M50 motorway orbiting Dublin.
That is almost EUR 30 million more than in 2021 and is also significantly above pre-pandemic levels. With more than four million passages each month, M50 is the busiest Irish motorway. The motorway uses a barrier-free Multi-Lane Free Flow tolling system, consisting of roadside equipment and image processing technology by Kapsch TrafficCom that went live in August 2021, with a single gantry covering a total of eight lanes.
“Our system has performed very well”, comments Steve Parsons, Sales Director UK and Ireland at Kapsch TrafficCom. “Kapsch system architecture is fully redundant without a single point of failure, which contributes to its stability and accuracy.”
The figures were released by Transport Infrastructure Ireland under the Freedom of Information Act. They show the toll revenue collected on the motorways and national roads the State agency is involved in, with M50 making up almost half of last year’s total tolling income of EUR 344 million.
