Kapsch TrafficCom optimizes traffic and parking at Las Teresitas beach

Madrid, March 11, 2024 – The Mobility Department of Santa Cruz, coordinated by councilor Evelyn Alonso, through the 189,000 euro contract signed with this international provider of transport solutions, will significantly reduce congestion and optimize the use of car parks for more sustainable mobility.
The Mobility Department of the Santa Cruz City Council, managed by councilor Evelyn Alonso, emphasizes that through the contract signed with Kapsch TrafficCom, with an investment of 189,000 euros, this leading firm in sustainable mobility solutions “has implemented an innovative traffic and parking management project on Las Teresitas beach, with the aim of improving the experience of both residents and visitors,” as mayor José Manuel Bermúdez also states.
For her part, councilor Evelyn Alonso emphasizes that “Las Teresitas beach, known for its natural beauty and its proximity to Santa Cruz, regularly suffers from traffic problems, especially during rush hours and on days when the weather is good” and argues that “with a capacity of 1,200 parking spaces, the area receives more than 900 vehicles at peak times, which causes traffic jams and makes it difficult to access the beach, so with the technology applied by the company Kapsch TrafficCom this problem will be significantly reduced.”
The new system includes five cameras that monitor the entrance and exit of the car park, counting the vehicles and calculating the available spaces in real time. In addition, specific sensors have been installed to manage the 120 spaces reserved for people with disabilities, guaranteeing equitable and orderly access for all users.
In this regard, in order to inform drivers about the availability of parking spaces, three variable message panels have been placed along the seven kilometers of coastal road leading to the beach. These panels provide up-to-date information, allowing drivers to make informed decisions before reaching their destination, assessing whether the car park is full, so drivers can choose alternatives, thus reducing congestion in the San Andrés area.
Javier Aguirre, CEO of Kapsch TrafficCom Spain and Portugal, emphasizes that “Spain has more than 3,000 beaches that attract both locals and tourists, so guaranteeing access to these coastal areas and preserving them for future generations is a substantial element. This project will not only improve mobility in Las Teresitas but will also contribute to a more pleasant experience for all visitors.”
The project, which began in November 2024, is scheduled for completion in May 2025. This is the second beach car park management project that Kapsch TrafficCom is carrying out in Spain, following the success in Ibiza.
