Kapsch TrafficCom celebrates North Carolina highway opening
Duluth, GA, October 1, 2024 – Kapsch TrafficCom celebrates in the opening of Complete 540 Phase 1, an extension of the Triangle Expressway in North Carolina, USA.
Opening for traffic at 6am on September 25th, the extension of the Triangle Expressway, also known as Toll N.C. 540, will enhance regional connectivity and reduce travel times for commuters and residents alike. The North Carolina Turnpike Authority (NCTA) selected Kapsch in 2017 to upgrade and modernize this expressway in Raleigh, N.C. with a comprehensive state-of-the-art tolling solution. Kapsch enabled the Authority to be the first multi-protocol facility in the United States with both the extension of the expressway and completion of the 540 project.

In 2017, NCTA selected Kapsch TrafficCom to supply transponders and automatic vehicle identification (AVI) Readers for twelve toll zones to the project, The equipment by Kapsch TrafficCom ensures easy and barrier-free tolling for all drivers. The project uses Kapsch VRx cameras and nVDC vision-based vehicle detection and classification.
As the designer, installer and integrator of the overall tolling system, Kapsch will provide maintenance and operation services after it opens for eight years. It is a first of its kind system in that it will provide all-electronic (also known as open road tolling) functionality without using any in-pavement sensors, saving the Authority significant maintenance costs for the duration of the contract.
