Kapsch TrafficCom: Most sustainable on-board unit makes next contribution to the circular economy
- Emission savings of 31%
- Most sustainable on-board unit on the market
Vienna, August 27, 2024 – On-Board Units (OBUs) are on-board devices for contactless toll collection that are used by millions of trucks and cars. The carbon footprint of Kapsch TrafficCom's TRP-4010 is TÜV-tested and the product is the smallest, lightest and most sustainable OBU of its kind currently available on the market.
Kapsch TrafficCom has also been offering a refurbishment service for this million-selling product for some time – this means that used units are serviced by Kapsch TrafficCom and brought back into the operating cycle. The extended life cycle makes the use of resources significantly more efficient. The old batteries are disposed of properly and in an environmentally friendly manner.
Fewer emissions, longer service life, same quality
Juliane Höbarth, Head of Product Security, Standardization, & Environmental Sustainability at Kapsch TrafficCom, explains: “The electronic components in the TRP-4010 last much longer than the battery. By renewing the battery and increasing quality assurance measures, we can achieve a significantly longer service life without compromising on quality.”
The refurbished units are subjected to the same quality controls as new units from production before they are delivered to customers. Compared to a freshly produced unit, an average of 31% of emissions can be saved. It also significantly reduces the amount of electronic waste.
Stabilizing supply chains
“Due to constant disruptions to global supply chains because of crisis regions and pandemics, especially in the electronics sector, it is often easier to plan the refurbishment of units in circulation than the production of new units. This service not only makes us more sustainable, but also increases availability and therefore reliability, as batteries and housings are much easier to obtain than electronic components,” says Juliane Höbarth.
Extending the life cycle of the TRP-4010, Kapsch TrafficCom's best-selling product, is an important step towards sustainable traffic design and the circular economy. The company is constantly working on further developing its products and making them more sustainable.
