Port of Bilbao Launches Connected Vehicles Project
- C-ITS technology makes traffic safer and more sustainable
Bilbao, Spain – July 2, 2024 – The Port of Bilbao is investing in road safety and efficient traffic management with its cutting-edge Connected Vehicles-project together with C-ITS provider Kapsch TrafficCom.
As part of the project, three new Roadside Units (RSUs) will be positioned strategically throughout the Port to facilitate seamless communication between vehicles and infrastructure, in addition to one virtual RSU. The information collected and shared by the RSUs will feed into the Connected Mobility Control Center that is part of the A8 highway project that was announced last year and is already up and running.
The integration with the existing system allows drivers in the Port of Bilbao to benefit from the same critical information available to highway users. This includes information on weather conditions, accidents, roadworks, traffic congestion, obstacles and speed limits. Additionally, drivers are able to contribute information to the system, improving the information quality and timeliness.
Javier Aguirre, Managing Director for Spain and Portugal at Kapsch TrafficCom, comments: “By providing drivers with accurate and timely information, the Port of Bilbao will increase awareness of traffic conditions and improve overall traffic safety. For an economic hub, it is exceedingly important to ensure a steady flow of traffic to avoid congestion and stalled delivery of goods.”
The system in the Port of Bilbao is expected to be fully ready and go online later this month.
