- Responsible Annotation Association Presents DIY Annotation Web Tool
- Annotation is a Fundamental Requirement for Artificial Intelligence (AI)
Vienna, May 29, 2024 – Last week in Vienna, the association Responsible Annotation, together with several project partners, presented its new web tool that allows users to get to know and train AI in an accessible and interactive manner.
On the website annotation.at, interested individuals can delve into the new field of annotation and test their suitability for AI training with the "Training Station". Additionally, users can learn about Artificial Intelligence, create image and sound material, and chat with an AI.
What is annotation?
Annotation involves adding information and labels to data and is one of the fundamental requirements for modern AI – since the respective systems must be trained before they can operate autonomously.
The association Responsible Annotation, founded with the support of Kapsch TrafficCom, aims to create inclusive workplaces in data processing for AI. People with autism are particularly well-suited for annotation as it requires high levels of concentration, accuracy, and resilience to perform this often repetitive work at the highest level. A medical study from JKU Linz, presented during the event, supports this finding.
"In Austria, the unemployment rate for people with autism is around 80%," explains Martin Hartl, Board Member of Responsible Annotation. "With the help of the tool, we want to connect companies that need annotation with people who can perform annotation."
Success story of annotation at Kapsch TrafficCom
After several years of project phase at Kapsch TrafficCom, where the annotation team has been instrumental in developing and improving Kapsch AI, the web tool marks the next step in enabling marginalized individuals to enter the job market.
Markus Wurm, Corporate Expert at Kapsch TrafficCom, explains the motivation for collaborating with the association: "This work is often outsourced to low-wage countries, resulting in poor quality outcomes due to questionable working conditions. Our approach is to employ people in Austria and maintain high quality standards, which is reflected in the work results produced by our team. This enables individuals with autism to secure meaningful employment, supports the Austrian economy, and strengthens us as a company."
The project partners
In addition to the association Responsible Annotation and Kapsch TrafficCom, the Software Competence Center Hagenberg is also involved in the development of the web tool. The project was funded by the digifonds of the Vienna Chamber of Labor.
