Hybrid tolling project on highways in southeastern France
- Almost 30 gantries on 430km of highway
- Tolling system to improve road experience on vital transit routes
Lyon/Vienna, February 20, 2024 – Kapsch TrafficCom is proud to announce a tolling contract awarded by APRR (Autoroutes Paris-Rhin-Rhône).
Awarded in September of 2023, Kapsch TrafficCom is bringing a Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) tolling system to the AREA network, encompassing key autoroutes A43, A41, and A49, east of Lyon. This project involves the installation of nearly 30 additional gantries, covering approximately 430 kilometers of highway and marking a crucial advancement in the region's transportation infrastructure.
Reflecting on the project, Michael Weber, Head of Sales EMENA at Kapsch TrafficCom, stated: “Together with our recent successes in Switzerland, Serbia and Spain, this project represents a significant step in the further development of tolling in Europe. It proves the quality of our tolling solutions, which are used globally, and also the added value of such systems for road traffic.”
The newly implemented system is a hybrid model, replacing the traditional entry toll plazas. Under this system, drivers will be detected by road cameras or DSRC tags as they enter the tolled sections of the highway. Upon exiting, drivers will stop at toll plazas to pay the calculated toll amount, a process that ensures efficiency and ease for both light and heavy goods vehicles. This project is particularly noteworthy as these highways serve as vital transit routes connecting Switzerland, Italy, and France.
The final go-live date of this extensive MLFF system is set for 2026. This transition represents a major leap forward in APRR's commitment to innovative transportation solutions, offering both time savings and increased convenience for motorists.
