Joint venture with Kapsch TrafficCom wins toll project in Switzerland
- Total project volume of around EUR 54 million over up to 10 years
- First tolling hardware that complies with EU taxonomy
Vienna/Bern, December 27, 2023 – A joint venture between Kapsch TrafficCom and the Swiss company LOSTnFOUND AG (part of AddSecure) has been awarded a contract by the Swiss Federal Office for Customs and Border Security (BAZG) to supply hardware and services for the national truck tolling system. Kapsch TrafficCom will make a key contribution and generate revenue in the low double-digit millions.
The financial scope of the contract totals around EUR 54 million and covers a term of eight years, with an optional two-year extension. In a 50:50 joint venture with the local partner company LOSTnFOUND AG (part of AddSecure), the project involves customer service, vehicle equipment and data collection for HGVs (heavy goods vehicles) weighing more than 3.5 tones. This will make the toll collection system more user-friendly and transparent.
Michael Weber, Head of Sales EMENA at Kapsch TrafficCom, comments on the success: “We are delighted to make a key contribution to the modernization of the Swiss toll collection system with our hardware and software. In addition, our on-board unit is certified in accordance with the EU Taxonomy Regulation on climate change.”
The project includes the delivery of the GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite System)-capable on-board units for the vehicles subject to toll collection, the recording of the GPS data registered by the units, their transmission to the federal office responsible for toll collection, as well as customer service.
TÜV-certified vehicle equipment
For equipping trucks weighing more than 3.5 tones with the GNSS on-board unit, the on-board unit itself and the basic processes such as vehicle registration, delivery and repair of the units are provided. The devices from Kapsch TrafficCom are TÜV-certified and proven to be the most sustainable in their class.
Data acquisition via mobile network
The on-board unit determines the waypoints using GNSS localization, records trailer parameters and total weight and transmits this driving data via the mobile communications network to the back office / IT system of the joint venture provider. The journey data is processed there and then transferred to the BAZG for processing.
Multilingual customer service
Customer service includes an online service portal that supports the administration of the vehicles in the system. Orders, fault reports and the replacement of on-board units can be placed in German, French, Italian and English via the service portal. Furthermore, there is a special solution for subsequent data entry or modification in case of a breakdown. A telephone hotline also provides vehicle owners with personal support.
