Latvia: High-tech traffic management system goes into operation
- Opening of the Ķekava bypass brings relief and improved traffic conditions
Vienna/Riga, November 22, 2023 – On October 13, the Ķekava bypass was officially opened, and with it the traffic management system from Kapsch TrafficCom.
The major infrastructure project, which is lauded as Latvia's first “high-speed road”, is intended to significantly reduce the volume of traffic in the small town of Ķekava.
Kapsch TrafficCom's involvement is exemplary for innovative traffic solutions: Technology from the company, including cameras, sensors and radar systems, as well as a modern and flexible traffic management software platform contribute significantly to safety and sustainability.
“The Ķekava project is not only a milestone for road PPPs and traffic in Latvia, but also a testament to the positive influence of state-of-the-art technology on road safety,” says Marko Frank, mobility expert and regional sales director at Kapsch TrafficCom.
Juris Frīdmanis, General Manager of the private partner JSC “Kekava ABT”, expressed his confidence: “We rely on Kapsch TrafficCom technologies to ensure safe and efficient operation of the Ķekava bypass for the next 20 years.”
Launched in 2021, this project was financed through a public-private partnership (PPP) model. The project will be implemented on a major section of the Bauska Motorway, one of Latvia's busiest roads, with an average traffic volume exceeding 17,000 vehicles per day.
With a total length of 17.2 kilometers and almost 20 kilometers of parallel roads, the new bypass will provide an efficient alternative for motorists travelling between Lithuania and Riga. While motorbikes, cars and buses will be allowed to use the road, tractors will be excluded. In parallel, infrastructure for pedestrians and cyclists will be provided.
