Kapsch TrafficCom expands production in Austria
- Production capacity to be increased by more than 30 percent
- More than 50 million on-board units produced in Vienna since 2008
Vienna, September 19, 2023 - Kapsch TrafficCom is expanding its production capacities for so-called on-board units (OBUs), which are on-board devices for contactless toll collection, by more than 30 percent at its site in Vienna. This translates to a production expansion of about 2 million OBUs per year. A total of EUR 1.3 million has been invested in the expansion of the industrial facility.
"Every single OBU produced means less waiting time at toll stations. Combined with the appropriate infrastructure and software platform, this OBU can reduce emissions and congestion," comments Georg Kapsch, CEO at Kapsch TrafficCom. "Road traffic is responsible for one fifth of global emissions - that's why we are working to make traffic sustainable through the use of technology."
The OBUs enable automatic toll payment without stopping at a toll booth, reducing emissions and travel times. In total, more than 50 million OBUs have been manufactured in Vienna since 2008. Currently, around 130 people are employed in production, which, in addition to OBUs, also manufacture highly complex camera systems for traffic and toll management.
Kapsch TrafficCom has been producing OBUs since the early 2000s, including for the Go-Maut in Austria and various other European and global customers. In 2008, production was moved from the traditional location at Johann-Hoffmann Platz in Meidling to the modern production facility spanning 6,000 m2 in Vienna's 23rd district, where OBUs have been manufactured fully automatically ever since.
